The text's page edges are rough-cut by the publisher, so the Fore Edge appears uneven. This extraordinary book is the result of Saul Bellow's trip to Israel in 1975. Bellows had covered the 1967 "Six Day War" for Newsday but this trip in 1975 was a very personal trip. In this book Bellow reflects on Israel's relationship with America, and includes brilliant portraits of the people and the land, such as lunch with Prime Minster Rabin, Isaac Stern at the audition of a nine-year old violinist, a father mourning the death of a son as he walks through the lemon groves, ceremonious Sabbath prayer, a Arab newspaper editor whose car was blown up by terrorists, a family who has lived in Jerusalem for six generations and more lovingly detailed portraits that only a talented, passionate writer like Bellow could provide. A marvelous read that not only captures the land and its' people but also addresses policies many vexed and bitter that surrounds Israel's life as a nation and may define its' future. For many of us this may be the closest we ever get to Jerusalem, thanks Saul Bellow for providing such a vivid picture.
